Good food, good company and rain!
And so it was the day Newquay Auto Club held their annual Classic & Sports Tour of Cornwall.
Sunday 19th June saw a fine selection of vehicles descended on the Rock Inn at Roche. The challenge ... to decipher and complete the route set out by Sarah Light and her merry band of men/women.
10:00 saw Sarah's brother Jason and his two very thorough assistances scrutinise each car as they came to the start line.
Simon Elks's beautiful Mk1 Healey Sprite made the first move, his 1958 year old machine ventured out onto the rain sodden highway. Each minute saw another vehicle let loose and disappear into the mist. Will we ever see them again?!
The challenging route first took competitors south towards Greensplat (what a lovely name!) and then on to Foxhole (another beauty!) before skirting St Stephen and then burrowing its way down towards Hewas Water and onto Polmassick to the first passage control. No problem!

If the junction at Tubbs Mill was navigated correctly then Caerhays beach and Castle soon put in an appearance en-route.
The lanes wandered towards Portmellon, then through Mevagissey heading north towards Pentewan, Tregorrick, Charlestown, Carlyon Bay before heading back to Britannia Inn, (near Tregrehan) for lunch.
The lunch was delicious ... that says it all ... delicious!

Competitors were now well stoked with confidence for the afternoon run! Changes were made to the seeding positions at the restart, which were decided by early and late arrivals at Britannia for lunch.

The afternoon run took on a more sinister roll as it headed north and eventually to the higher ground of Bodmin Moor. Not before famous names such as Trethurgy, Penwithick, Luxulyan, Lanlivery Puddle and Sweetshouse flashed by before tackling Redmoor and on to Cardinham. The mist, gorse and many a cattle grid hinted at higher ground. The afternoon passage control was on an exposed junction close to Mount. Warleggan and St Neot followed before heading towards lower contour lines and the lush hedgerows near Dobwalls.
The steeds were given their head as they headed for home, speeds increased, but there was to be a sting in the tail. Junction turn right at Bilberry presented all with a tight 3 mile section before the final pull passed Roche Rock and to the finish .... at the start, Rock Inn!

Surprisingly the weather didn't spoil what was a thoroughly good event, and long may it rain, sorry reign...!!
Thanks must go to Sarah and her Aunt Molly who spent several hours and miles making sure the route was A OK.
To the Marshals a ginormous thank you for turning out in what can only describe as grim conditions.
To our secretary Peggy, husband Keith, Ian and Martine ... great job as always, thank you.
To the judges Richard and Richard, a job well done.
Our lunch time venue Britannia Inn has also added to the charity fund, for which we owe many thanks.
To our sponsors Don Statton, Richard Rowe at Treburley Garage, Andy and Hannah at Degembris Accommodation and last but not least Peter Hooper at Hoopers of Fraddon. Thank you all.

Everyone, that is Everyone has played their part in raising approximately £1500 for Cornwall Hospice Care. A big pat on the back is justified!

Look forward to seeing you all next year!
